1. Red Fort

Around 350 years ago, the Mughals constructed the Red Fort during the reign of Shah Jahan. It is an architectural mammoth which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It reflects the fusion of Mughal, Persian, Timurid and Hindu culture. Most of the possessions of the fort were looted by Nadir Shah and the Britishers but it still stands tall and represents the culture of India.

Most of the people mistake the Fort being just the gate depicted in pictures but it is much bigger and huge. It is spread in an area of 255 acres and is enclosed by about two and a half kilometers of defensive walls.

Every year during the Independence Day of India, the Prime Minister hoists the National Flag at the main gate of the Fort and addresses the Nation.


2. India Gate

India Gate is a war memorial to the seventy thousand British India soldiers who died fighting during the First World War. Names of thirteen thousand and three hundred servicemen are inscribed on the historic monument. After the Bangladesh Liberation war of 1971, in the year 1972, the Amar Jawan Jyoti was constructed. It is a reversed rifle which is capped with a war helmet and is bounded by four eternal flames.

4. Lotus Temple

5. Humayun’s Tomb

Situated in Delhi, it is the Tomb of Mughal Emperor Humayun. It was constructed between the years 1569 to 1570 after being commissioned by Humayun’s first wife Bega Begum. Humayun’s Tomb is the first Garden Tomb that was constructed in the Indian subcontinent and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in the year 1993.

6. Qutub Minar

Another UNESCO World Heritage site present in Delhi is the Qutb Complex. The Qutub Minar is a minaret that is a part of the Qutb Complex. The tower is 73 meters high with five storeys.

The complex was built about 800 years ago and the construction started under the rule of Qutb ud Din Aibak. New additions to the complex were constructed by many rulers thereafter including Sher Saha Suri too.

The Qutb Complex also houses other famous structures including Alai Darwaza, Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque and Iron Pillar. It is also the place of rest of rulers Iltutmish and Ala-ud-din Khilji.

7. Jantar Mantar

If Astronomy intrigues you, this should be a must visit place in Delhi. Build about 300 years ago by Maharaja Jai Singh, the structure houses 13 architectural astronomy instruments. It is one of the five built observatories.
